BIPOLAR AND SUICIDE
One of the most serious side effects of this illness is suicide. Advice given to others is that suicide is never an option. Think not? Statistics indicate that a suicide occurs every 17 minutes in America alone. Calculate that for a 24-hour period. Any type of bipolar personality can come to this state whether it be unipolar, bipolar I, bipolar II, manic, or schizophrenic caused by various triggers or mood swings. One of the triggers could be the wrong medication. An author states that individuals learning to deal with this illness, especially in the early stages, find themselves in a "sinkhole of despair" and believe the only out is suicide. If you are bipolar or a friend or relative of one with this disorder, it is imperative that help be sought immediately. Dialing 911 isn't nearly as difficult as planning a funeral. Each individual has a purpose in this life. It is so important that each of us turn to those we love for strength and reach beyond the abyss, escaping that deep hole threatening our peace and well being. Two excellent sources to calm our thoughts and realize that we are not alone are Kay R. Jamison's book, An Unquiet Mind, and Viktor Frankl's infamous Man's Search for Meaning. Excerpts can be found online. All should recognize signs of suicide which can be found at Bipolarhelp.com. or Bipolar.com.We are here for all of those who feel that life no longer offers hope. It really does. I've been there.

Do you have any extra information on Lithium? Side effects or any information would be helpful! Thanks! Bless you for this blog!
Thank you for visiting. The only personal information I can offer is that my daughter's physician will not prescribe Lithium because of a history of her stomach ailments. Evidently, the medication creates excessive stomach acid which could compound other issues. Many swear by its positive effects. The chemical make-up of the 1950 drug was updated in 1970, but there are still more side effects than what my daughter is now taking, Geodon. I would encourage research on any drug being prescribed due to everyone's symptoms and chemical make-ups being different. Two good sites for info is www.drugdigest.org and www.medicine.net. A side by side comparison can be made at the Drug Digest site. Good luck. It's a compliment to you that you are researching before acceptance which deters having to experiment with whatever is prescribed. God bless you and yours. Visit again.
